High scientific level, tremendous visitors from Polish and foreign scientific centers and the unique atmosphere of the Kościuszko Mound in Krakow – this how in few words one can summarize the 3rd edition of the International Conference on the Sustainable Energy & Environmental Development (SEED2019) conference organized by the Institute of Sustainable Energy.
The 3rd edition of the International Conference on the Sustainable Energy & Environmental Development was held on October 16-18, 2019. As the conference venue, the Kościuszko Mound was chosen – a unique place on the map of Krakow where you can learn about the history of Poles’ path to freedom and see the historic 19th century fort, one of the oldest preserved creations of the Krakow Fortress.
Representatives of 26 institutions from Poland and the world attended SEED2019 conference. Among the participants there were: the representatives of 12 foreign institutions (Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Brno University of Technology, DBFZ Deutsches Biomasseforschungszentrum, Dokuz Eylul University, Instituto Superior Tecnico, Istanbul Technical University, Universiti Malaysia Pahang, University of Naples Federico II, University of Naples ” Parthenope ”, University of South Africa, Technische Universität Wien, TØI Institute of Transport Economics), 14 Polish institutions (AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków, Maritime University of Gdynia, BOSMAL Automotive Research and Development Institute, Motor Transport Institute in Warsaw, Częstochowa University of Technology , Cracow University of Technology, Poznan University of Technology, Rzeszów University of Technology, Silesian University of Technology, Polish Academy of Sciences, University of Gdansk, Jagiellonian University in Krakow, University of Bialystok, West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin) and representatives of the Golden Sponsor of the conference– G.U.N.T. company.
Dr. Katarzyna Szramowiat-Sala (chairwoman of the Organizing Committee) and Prof. Mariusz Filipowicz (chairman of the Scientific Committee) led a grand inauguration of SEED2019 conference. Then the following spoke: Prof. Mieczysław Rokosz (president of the Kościuszko Mound Committee), who briefly presented the figure of Tadeusz Kościuszko and the history of the Kościuszko Mound, and Michał Skóra (designer of heating and cooling installations at the Kościuszko Mound). After the opening ceremony, during Opening Session I, Prof. Francesco Calise (University of Naples Federico II) gave a speech on the theme: “Polygeneration systems fed by renewables: a novel paradigm for a sustainable production of electricity, heat, cool and water”, and Jakub Dzida (BOSMAL Automotive Research and Development Institute) – delivered a lecture on “Global development of emissions reduction from light duty vehicles and its impact on propulsion technology.” Successive speaker – Andreas Vilshöver from the G.U.N.T. company, presented the didactic positions offer for the universities, which was followed by four oral sessions and a poster session. A gala dinner, which took place in the courtyard of the Kościuszko Mound ended the first day of the conference. There was a night trip to the top of the Kościuszko Mound, after raising a toast during the gala dinner.
The speeches of invited guests also started the second day of the conference. Dr. Simona Di Fraia (University of Naples “Parthenope”) gave a lecture about “Energy efficiency in wastewater treatment plants”, while Prof. Anita Lewandowska (University of Gdańsk) delivered a speech on the theme “Toxic and hazardous substances in PM1 and PM2.5 aerosols over Gdynia”. Five sessions of oral presentations and the second of the scheduled poster sessions followed the session of invited speakers’ speeches.
During the third and last day of the conference participants of the SEED2019 conference had the opportunity to participate in a visit to the AGH University of Science and Technology. The participants were presented opportunities for cooperation with the Faculty of Energy and Fuels (including the Department of Sustainable Energy Development) by the Prof. Mariusz Filipowicz. After listening to the short presentation, the participants went to the Innogy AGH Solarlab laboratory, where they had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the 7.5 kW solar installation. Participants also saw a laboratory for the use of renewable energy sources in polygeneration systems, where they were able to learn more about the system of combined heat and electricity production with a biomass boiler operating according to a modified Rankine cycle. The last point of visit was the Laboratory of Energy Changes in Renewable Energy, where the SEED2019 participants became acquainted with the operation of wind turbine installations integrated with the building. After the meeting held at the AGH University of Science and Technology, participants of SEED2019 conference took part in an organized trip to the Krakow city center. During the sightseeing participants had the opportunity to see such places as: Barbican, Main Market Square and Wawel Castle.
The Organizing Committee of SEED2019 would like to express their gratitude to all participants for participating in the 3rd International Conference on the Sustainable Energy & Environmental Development. At the same time, we would like to invite You to participate in the next conference organized by the Institute for Sustainable Energy – International Conference on the Clean Environment and Energy Research, which will take place in Gdansk on June 17-19, 2020.
